Flax is an ancient crop that was grown on a large scale on the Frisian clay soil in the nineteenth century. The crop is not only useful, the fields full of cute blue or white flax flowers are also beautiful to see! The flowering period of the flax flower is short: only one day!
Flax is one of the most sustainable products that has recently been in the spotlight again. Around 1880, Friesland was the largest producer of flax in the Netherlands. The crop serves as an important raw material for the production of linen.

Everything from the flax plant is used. The woody parts, loam, are processed into sheet material and furniture. The seeds are pressed into linseed oil and nowadays flax is used for sustainable insulation material.

Flax can be grown without much fertilizer and pesticides. The long roots are also beneficial for the biodiversity of the soil.
